ORNELLAIA
UMBRIA IGT
White Wine Territory, Where Time Stands Still
Castello della Sala is located in Umbria, a short distance from the Tuscan border, about 18 kilometers from the historic city of Orvieto. Castello della Sala, a magnificent medieval manor with 600 hectares (1482 acres) of land 200 (495 acres) of which are planted with vineyards, is located halfway between the Paglia river and the summit of Monte Nibbio.
History
Castello della Sala was built in 1350 by Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera whose family arrived in Italy in the IX century following Charlemagne’s troops. The 1300’s marked the beginning of a long series of conflicts between family members in order to gain control over Orvieto. In 1437 Gentile, grandson of Angelo dei Monaldeschi della Vipera, gained control of the city and reigned as dictator for over a decade. Following Gentile’s death in 1466, a peaceful period started at the castle, culminating with the reconciliatory marriage of Gentile’s son, Pietro Antonio della Vipera, and his cousin Giovanna Monaldeschi della Cervara.
The vineyards
The estate’s 200 hectares (495 acres) of vineyards are located at an altitude of 220 – 470 meters above sea level (722-1542 feet) and are planted with traditional varieties such as Procanico and Grechetto but also with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sèmillon, Pinot Blanc, Viognier and a small quantity of Traminer and Riesling. The region is exceptional for producing white varieties with one exception, Pinot Noir, that has found ideal conditions in this terroir to best express its full potential. The vines grow in clay and calcareous based soils, rich in fossil shells, and they are well exposed to the rising of the sun with an excellent difference of temperature between day and night.

It’s always a pleasure to drink the small brother from Ornellaia.
It’s an amazing Tuscan wine for a good price. Dry and oaky, with black fruit notes.

This time this wine had a much much elegant taste. Mushrooms and black spice but still smooth. (Must have been something wrong on the first bottle)

This Ornellaia Le Volte 2021 vintage may be young but is “à boire” already! Is this the result of global warming, resulting in much riper harvests?

As always, Ornellaia brings really good wine. Ruby red one, red fruit aroma alongside light spiciness. Well balanced, friendly, smooth tannins with refreshing acidity.

Quite nice red from Tuscany. I’m a fan of IGT wines. Medium body, smooth, notes of leather, oak, cherry and black fruit. Paired with grillled meat and agnolotti.

91 pts; beautifully balanced wines with rich berry fruit, a lovely oak treatment, complex tannins, and great acidity. One of the great “New Tuscany” wines of Bolgarhi. Highly recommended.
