ORNELLAIA
UMBRIA IGT
White Wine Territory, Where Time Stands Still
Castello della Sala is located in Umbria, a short distance from the Tuscan border, about 18 kilometers from the historic city of Orvieto. Castello della Sala, a magnificent medieval manor with 600 hectares (1482 acres) of land 200 (495 acres) of which are planted with vineyards, is located halfway between the Paglia river and the summit of Monte Nibbio.
History
Castello della Sala was built in 1350 by Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera whose family arrived in Italy in the IX century following Charlemagne’s troops. The 1300’s marked the beginning of a long series of conflicts between family members in order to gain control over Orvieto. In 1437 Gentile, grandson of Angelo dei Monaldeschi della Vipera, gained control of the city and reigned as dictator for over a decade. Following Gentile’s death in 1466, a peaceful period started at the castle, culminating with the reconciliatory marriage of Gentile’s son, Pietro Antonio della Vipera, and his cousin Giovanna Monaldeschi della Cervara.
The vineyards
The estate’s 200 hectares (495 acres) of vineyards are located at an altitude of 220 – 470 meters above sea level (722-1542 feet) and are planted with traditional varieties such as Procanico and Grechetto but also with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sèmillon, Pinot Blanc, Viognier and a small quantity of Traminer and Riesling. The region is exceptional for producing white varieties with one exception, Pinot Noir, that has found ideal conditions in this terroir to best express its full potential. The vines grow in clay and calcareous based soils, rich in fossil shells, and they are well exposed to the rising of the sun with an excellent difference of temperature between day and night.

To get a wine like this at that price is what makes it. I would drink this with most heavy meals. You wont go wrong with Ornellaia.

Some of the wines tasted in Grand Vin -wine fair last weekend in Helsinki. Lots of wines, lots of fun, but not enough time for detailed tasting notes. Just the general feeling.

Excellent value junior Tuscan. Worth it now and will be better later.
Notes of cherry, sun-dried tomato, tobacco, oak and leather

Great super tuscan, affordable price range. Blackberry and plum coming in strong with a bit of cherry and very nicely balanced oak with chocolate and some tobacco on the palate. Must try category!

Good super tuscan. Juicy red and black fruits, reminds me Washington state Syrah. High acidity, mellow tannins. Great with steak or on its own.

Garnet and ruby blended in the glass. Clear. I found the nose to be quite closed. Maybe some Cherry but little else. The wine is medium bodied with genorous acidity. Lots of both black fruit and red fruit but primarily the former at the start. Next we have mushroom, leather and forest floor appearing. Long finish. Very nice indeed. 4.5 probably generous, 4.2 probably where I would put it if I wanted to be precise.

Did not find this special but quite straightforward in fruit and oak. That said, this was regrettably one of the last bottles tested and the tasting notes are reasonably not very accurate. Needs a re-taste during more calm circumstances.
